"Logansteno: Bought a VW?" (logansteno)

That noise is back again. Only louder, and happening at a shorter interval.
I've ruled out that it ins't the alternator, because that was replaced less than 2 years ago. The power steering isn't low on fluid, just filled that up not very long ago. It could be a bearing in one of the engine pulleys though.
Or my water pump is actually fried and the only reason I can drive it is because it's cold enough out to keep the temp down.
WILL YOU PLEASE JUST DIE ALREADY YOU PIECE OF SHIT SO I CAN GET SOMETHING NEW.
I have audio of it (I think, I haven't listened back to my recording) but I can't upload it yet.

this is not sound logic.
it's likely not the alternator, but you couldve replaced it with a faulty part.
also, can you replicate the noise? does it happen while at idle? have you heard the noise with the engine running and the hood up while trying to locate the noise?

4.3, right?

I feel like I would've heard it waaay sooner if it was a faulty part.
It happens at low engine speeds like coasting in a parking lot. And at idle. And sometimes it happens for a second at highway speeds. Basically, almost constant at idle and low speeds, and sometimes at high speeds.
I've tried to find the noised under the hood, but to no avail.

Yeah. But it's not a Vortec motor.

Hard motor to kill, I'm afraid. ;)

Don't gotta tell me. I've been trying to kill the damn thing since I first got my hands on it in April.

It's going to explode soon.

But it won't. The noise will eventually go away and it'll go back to being fine. Because you can't kill a GM 4300.

Not entirely true. We ended up putting a Jasper motor in my younger brother's Astro LT that he got with a dead one in it. Spun bearings. *Talent* on the part of the previous owner.

YES.
The GM4300 V6, the Nokia phone of engines.

Well, it's cold outside now, and the alternator needs to work harder. Not entirely out of the question for it to go bad even at 2 years old.

Hahaha
I've told you my first truck was an 88 S10 Blazer 4.3L that I built ground up. The reason I built the engine for my first truck is the guy who sold it to us for 500 bucks because...he killed the engine.
If you really want it dead - apparently no oil will kill them.

DUDE.
My dad's friend had a 4.3 S10 he ran WITHOUT OIL to try to kill it. The damn thing still ran like a top.
Mine was already running without coolant and almost no transmission fluid.
THEY DON'T DIE.

You'll be in your late 80s before it even hints at going away.

Weird, because my dad's friend ran his S10 without oil and it worked fine for months and months.

lol
well the rings were shot on it and the pistons slapped around scarring up the cylinders and a headgasket went.
it had just a bit over 100k miles too.
It was ok though because it motivated us to bore it 60 over as well as a few other upgrades....

If there's one thing GM can do well, it's engines. Almost too well.

All that will be left of pre-2008 GM vehicles 100 years from now will be the engines and crumbled remains of the plastic snaps that hold the rest of the car together.

You might be able to find a whole Silverado. That'll turn over and still run like the day it was taken off the showroom floor.

Tell that to my sister's 99 Silverado. Will randomly refuse to start, nobody can figure out why. Replaced the filters, head gaskets were going bad so we did that, manifold gaskets as well, fuel pump replay was flaky but replacing that didn't fix it either.
Might be the fuel spider.
It's probably the fuel spider.
